Action!

Posted 5 Mar 2013 by JC

Remember the “Edit” link that was added a couple weeks ago? It’s been moved to a new “Actions” pane. And it has some new friends.

Anytime you’re logged in, the detail page for any pattern will display an “Actions” pane containing a “Duplicate” link. Clicking that link will duplicate the pattern, and open up an edit window for the duplicate. This makes it easy to create pattern variations.

And anytime you visit the detail page for a pattern you’ve contributed, the “Actions” pane will also contain “Edit” and “Delete” links. The “Edit” link works as before. The “Delete” link deletes the stitch pattern – but don’t worry, it asks for confirmation first.

Coming soon: more actions! How about an “Export as PDF” link?

Specifying row numbers

Posted 25 Feb 2013 by JC

If you’ve read our overview, you know that you can contribute a pattern to the collection by entering written instructions in the form of “knitspeak.” The rules for knitspeak state that each set of instructions needs to begin with a list of row numbers – for example,

Rows 2, 4, 6, and 8: Purl.

The list has to begin with “row” or “round,” and has to end with a colon :, but between the two you can list the row numbers pretty much any way you want: You can list them in any order. You can list them with or without separating commas. And – drum roll, please – as of today, you can also list ranges of row numbers. Here’s an example:

Rounds 3-7 and 9-13: Knit.

Specifying a range like “3-7” is a tad more convenient than having to enter “3, 4, 5, 6, and 7,” don’t you agree?

You know what else would be convenient? The option of saying “Row 2 and all other WS rows” rather than “Rows 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14.” But that improvement waits for another day.

Now with edit capabilities

Big news! You can now edit patterns that you’ve contributed to the collection.

It’s easy: Navigate to the pattern’s detail page. If you had contributed the pattern, you’ll see an “Edit” link next to the pattern’s name:

Click that link, and you’ll see an edit form similar to the contribute form. You’ll be able to change the name of the pattern, add to its description, fix typos in its instructions, and update its tags.

Have fun with this new feature! And, as always, let me know if you have questions or comments.

Edited 5 March 2013: The “Edit” link now appears in the “Actions” pane.

Improved error messages

Posted 1 Feb 2013 by JC

Silly little typos are enough to create a roadblock when attempting to contribute a new pattern to the collection. But recent changes to Stitch-Maps.com ought to make that process a tiny bit easier. Obscure error messages have been replaced by “friendlier” and hopefully more meaningful messages.

Here’s an example. Say you enter this:

Row 1 (WS): Knit.
Row 2: *K2fog, yo, repeat from *, k1.
Rows 3 and 4: Knit.

Whoops! It contains a typo. But instead of the cryptic invalid token: k2fog, you’ll now see We don’t know what “K2fog” means. You’ll also be told that K2fog is on row 2.

An earth-shattering improvement? Perhaps not. But it ought to make contributions a tad easier to make. Give it a try!

Row numbers

By popular request, each stitch map now displays row numbers: at the stitch map’s right edge for right-side rows (and for rounds, which are essentially right-side rows), and at the stitch map’s left edge for wrong-side rows. These row numbers match the stitch pattern’s written instructions – for example, the 12 rows of a stitch map showing three vertical repeats of four-row pattern will be numbered 1-4, 1-4, 1-4.

Currently, the row numbers are always on display. Would you like to be able to turn the display of row numbers on and off, as you can with symbols, rows guides, and column guides? Then let me know, and I’ll add that option to my to-do list.
