Mea culpa!

Posted 2 Oct 2013 by JC

Due to a colossal mistake on my part, the database that underlies Stitch-Maps.com became corrupted this afternoon. I’ve managed to restore from a backup, but the backup was unfortunately ten days old. As a result:

  • Stitch patterns and swatch photos added to the collection since September 22 have been lost. I’m terribly sorry!
  • A few people will need to reset their passwords. You should have already received email explaining how to do this.
  • No subscriptions were lost. If you feel that the “Manage your subscription” page does not correctly reflect your subscription status, please contact me.
  • I will be taking steps to ensure this does not happen again!

A thousand apologies for the inconvenience!

Better browsing

Get a load of this new toy on the Browse page:

With swatch photos checkbox

Click that checkbox, and the Browse page will show you which stitch patterns have swatch photos.

But, wait – there’s more! Ask for your search results to be shown as swatch photos...

Show as swatch photos

...and you’ll get a series of swatch photo thumbnails:

I don’t know about you, but I think this is way cool.

What if you ask for the search results to be shown swatch photos without clicking the “With swatch photos” checkbox? Simple: you’ll see swatch photos for the stitch patterns that have them, and stitch maps for those that don’t.

search results, mix of swatch photos and stitch maps

That’s not all. The Browse page now lets you search for all the patterns contributed by the same person. Enter your own username to see all the patterns you’ve contributed.

Contributor: jcbriar (input box)

Or use the “Contributor” link on any stitch pattern’s detail page to see all the patterns contributed by that person.

Back on the Browse page, if you have a subscription you can choose to see any combination of your public, private, and hidden patterns.

Visibility checkboxes

This is a quick way of verifying that all your patterns have the visibility settings you prefer.

One last goodie: by default, the Browse page now displays the most recently added stitch pattern first.

Order by: recently added

This ought to keep the Browse page “fresh,” don’t you agree? But don’t worry – you can still see the stitch patterns ordered alphabetically by name if you prefer.

Enjoy!

Swatch photos

Stitch maps are awesome for visualizing stitch patterns, but do you know what’s even better? Swatch photos.

Horseshoe swatch photo

Yup, that’s right. Stitch-Maps.com now features swatch photos.

If swatch photos have been uploaded for a stitch pattern, you’ll see a “Swatch photos” link on that stitch pattern’s detail page, under its stitch map. Click that link to view the swatch photos.

Swatch photos display

Anyone who’s logged in can upload a swatch photo for a stitch pattern. Just look for the “Upload swatch photo” link on the right side of the stitch pattern’s detail page.

Upload swatch photo link

Click that link, and you can select a photo. If you have a “modern” web browser, you’ll see a small preview image.

Once you’ve selected a photo, click the “Upload” button. That’s all there is to it!

Symbol keys

Posted 31 Jul 2013 by JC

Those of you with premium subscriptions will like this new feature: in addition to exporting publication-quality stitch maps in PDF, EPS, or SVG format, you can now export their symbol keys too. For example, here’s the symbol key for Traveling Vine:

sample key

A time-saver, that’s what this is! If you’re including a stitch map in a pattern you’re publishing, you don’t have to create the key yourself. You don’t have to figure out which symbols to include, and whether they need to be defined for use on wrong-side rows as well as right-side rows. That’s all handled for you now. Enjoy!

Cast-on counts

Posted 19 Jul 2013 by JC

Here’s a handy new feature: The detail page for each stitch pattern now shows the pattern’s cast-on count. For example, the cast-on count for Fleurette is a multiple of 6 stitches, plus 7:

cast-on count

So, when a stitch map with 2 horizontal repeats is on display, the cast-on count is 2 × 6 + 7 or 19 stitches:

shown with a count of 19

Note that this is just the cast-on count! The stitch count may change from row to row – as it does for Fleurette.

Also, on the Browse page, you can now search for stitch patterns with the same cast-on multiple:

How will you make use of this new feature?
