Bow tie grid

Should fold up into an interlocking grid of bowtie-looking shapes. Intended to give the pattern seen being simulated in James McCann' seminar "On-Demand Machine Knitting for Everyone". 12n+7 stitches, 12m+9 rows for an n x m repeat.


In practice it doesn't quite fold/curl, and doesn't quite round out quite enough to give a bow-tie shape, instead looking like a basket-weave of horizontal/vertical ribbing. It might do better if doubled (both stitch- and row-wise) and knit tightly in thin yarn.

  • Rows 1 and 21 (WS): P1, p5, *k7, p5, repeat from * to last st, p1.
  • Rows 2, 4, 6, 16, 18, and 20: *K7, [k1, p1] twice, k1, repeat from * to last 7 sts, k7.
  • Rows 3, 5, 7, 15, 17, and 19: *K7, [p1, k1] twice, p1, repeat from * to last 7 sts, k7.
  • Rows 8 and 14: *K1, [k1, p1] twice, k1, repeat from * to last st, k1.
  • Rows 9, 11, and 13: P1, [p1, k1] twice, p1, *k7, [p1, k1] twice, p1, repeat from * to last st, p1.
  • Rows 10 and 12: K1, [k1, p1] twice, k1, *k7, [k1, p1] twice, k1, repeat from * to last st, k1.
  • Repeat rows 3-14.
