Note: For the sake of simplicity, the instructions below refer to placing beads onto stitches with the help of a crochet hook. You can, of course, use a different tool if you like, such as a bit of bent wire.

Gathers

Note: For each of these gathers, complete the gather before dropping any stitches off your left needle. For example, to work a 5-to-3 gather: knit the next five stitches together, leaving all five stitches on your left needle; yarn over; knit into the same five stitches again, then drop those five stitches off your left needle.

• 2-to-2 gather = (K1, k1 tbl) in next 2 stitches.
• 2-to-3 gather = (K1, yo, k1) in next 2 stitches.
• 2-to-5 gather = [K1, (yo, k1) twice] in next 2 stitches.
• 2-to-7 gather = [K1, (yo, k1) 3 times] in next 2 stitches.
• 2-to-9 gather = [K1, (yo, k1) 4 times] in next 2 stitches.

Wrapped stitches

Note: The instructions below ask you to wrap a group of stitches a single time, then work the stitches in stockinette stitch. It’s equally possible to wrap the group of stitches multiple times, or to work the stitches in some other stitch pattern. Refer to any notes accompanying a stitch pattern to see precisely how stitches should be wrapped for that stitch pattern.

• wrap 2 sts = Slip 2 stitches with yarn in front, bring yarn to back, slip these 2 stitches back to left needle. K2 on RS, or p2 on WS.
• wrap 3 sts = Slip 3 stitches with yarn in front, bring yarn to back, slip these 3 stitches back to left needle. K3 on RS, or p3 on WS.
• wrap 4 sts = Slip 4 stitches with yarn in front, bring yarn to back, slip these 4 stitches back to left needle. K4 on RS, or p4 on WS.
• wrap 5 sts = Slip 5 stitches with yarn in front, bring yarn to back, slip these 5 stitches back to left needle. K5 on RS, or p5 on WS.
• wrap 6 sts = Slip 6 stitches with yarn in front, bring yarn to back, slip these 6 stitches back to left needle. K6 on RS, or p6 on WS.
• wrap 7 sts = Slip 7 stitches with yarn in front, bring yarn to back, slip these 7 stitches back to left needle. K7 on RS, or p7 on WS.
• wrap 8 sts = Slip 8 stitches with yarn in front, bring yarn to back, slip these 8 stitches back to left needle. K8 on RS, or p8 on WS.
• wrap 9 sts = Slip 9 stitches with yarn in front, bring yarn to back, slip these 9 stitches back to left needle. K9 on RS, or p9 on WS.

• k = Knit.
• p = Purl.
• RS = Right side.
• WS = Wrong side.

Threaded stitches

• 1/1 left thread thru = Slip 2 stitches with yarn on WS, dropping any extra wraps. Insert left needle into first stitch slipped, then pull it over the other stitch and return it to left needle. Return remaining stitch to left needle. K2 on RS, p2 on WS.
• 1/1 purled left thread thru = Slip 2 stitches with yarn on RS, dropping any extra wraps. Insert left needle into first stitch slipped, then pull it over the other stitch and return it to left needle. Return remaining stitch to left needle. P2 on RS, k2 on WS.
• 1/1 right thread thru = Slip 2 stitches with yarn on WS, dropping any extra wraps. Return stitches to left needle. Insert right needle into 2nd stitch on left needle. Pull it over the first stitch, leaving it on the left needle. K2 on RS, p2 on WS.

• 2/2 left thread thru = Slip 4 stitches with yarn on WS, dropping any extra wraps. Insert left needle into first two stitches slipped, then pull them over the other two stitches and return them to left needle. Return remaining two stitches to left needle. K4 on RS, p4 on WS.
• 2/2 purled left thread thru = Slip 4 stitches with yarn on RS, dropping any extra wraps. Insert left needle into first two stitches slipped, then pull them over the other two stitches and return them to left needle. Return remaining two stitches to left needle. P4 on RS, k4 on WS.
