This is a method to begin a hat knit from the top down. It's an easy way to size a hat for a specific person.
With 2 dpns, CO 8 sts using a toe-up cast on method. Place 2 sts on each of 4 needles. Set up rnd: K1, kfb (12 sts). Increase diameter of crown according to directions below. On Rnd 5, place a marker after each kfb st. On successive odd-numbered rnds knit to st before marker, kfb, …

With 2 dpns, CO 8 sts using a toe-up cast on method. Place 2 sts on each of 4 needles. Set up rnd: K1, kfb (12 sts). Increase diameter of crown according to directions below. On Rnd 5, place a marker after each kfb st. On successive odd-numbered rnds knit to st before marker, kfb, slip marker (8 sts increased). Work all even-numbered rnds k1, p1. Continue in this fashion until crown of hat reaches desired circumference. Then begin side of hat (will accommodate patterns with multiples of 2, 4, or 8 sts) and work until ready to add ribbing.
