This is the cleaned up version:

  • aligned the motifs (I'm not sure this is the exact way Mrs Gaugain was referring to in her note, but if it isn't, it's a starting point, at least)
  • changed k2tog …

The original pattern is still well worth looking at, but this one should be easier to work from.
