For a Knitted Collar

From the Project Gutenberg version of Exercises in Knitting by Cornelia Mee.

Notes: The instructions for the slipped stitches simply say to slip them. I've mapped this as "sl1 wyif". Otherwise, knitter's choice.

The edging (the 10 st section: rows 1-8 or 49-56) is worked 16 times before you start the collar, and 16 times after you end the collar. In this map, work rows 1-8 15 times, then work rows 9-16 once. After the main collar is done, work rows 41-48 once, then rows 49-56 15 times. -- "Begin with the first row again, and repeat the pattern 15 times"

Then after the first "pattern" (collar) repeat: -- Begin with the first row again. Care must be taken to knit the proper rows of the edging; knit the collar the length you please, cast off from the straight side 56 stitches, repeat the edging pattern 16 times, cast off, and sew the edging neatly on to the sides of the collar; sew a narrow band of muslin to the neck part to make it firm. It will be observed that, in beginning the second time with the first row of the collar pattern, it is the fifth row of edging which must be knit, and so on every second time the pattern is begun."

The edging has an eight row repeat. The "pattern" has a 12 row repeat. Taken together, they have a 24 row repeat as reflected in the map.

The finishing instructions say "cast off, and sew the edging neatly on to the sides of the collar; sew a narrow band of muslin to the neck part to make it firm". I'm not sure how to parse this, partly because I'm not sure what the collar should look like when worn. 16 repeats of an 8 row pattern will be 128 rows: I suspect two rows per cast-on/bind-off stitch (which would work with the garter ground for the edging), with the extra 16 sts forming a ruffle to go around the corner. At that point, the neck part is likely the three stitches at the right edge of the collar (the only part that doesn't have the edging), but after that, I have no idea.

Shown with a cast-on count of 10 stitches.   Getting chart...
