This is a variation on the very simple Scarf Stitch, which is k2, p2 on a multiple of 4 + 1. It is the extra stitch that creates the off-set pattern. From left to right, it is not symmetric, though. To make it symmetric, knit on a multiple of 4 + 3 and change the ending. This necessitates another row that starts on p2, k2. (On the swatch photos, the part after the casting off of 2 stitches is the symmetric part.)
Shown with a cast-on count of 11 stitches.
