The hat is made of alternating reverse-stockinette stripes (4 rows make the main swirling stripe) and stockinette stripes that are recessed and taper. All pairs of rows have an increase at the hatband end and a decrease at the other end. The stockinette (recessed) swirls have short rows, and I found it neater to decrease after the wrap & turn, but I'm not sure how much it matters. The short-row pairs are staggered, ending closer or further from the center top (decrease edge) to provide some shaping...I improvised, but this map is laid out as just one variation. My short rows varied from just inside the decrease edge to about 1/3 of the way from that. I think I sometimes did two short rows on the recessed rows, as I remember going over the w&t on the front-bulging stripes.
I used just short of a skein for the hat (Wool Ease Thick & Quick). I didn't count rows but there seem to be 9 or 10 purl stripes (sometimes I goofed and did an extra pair of rows within a stripe, so maybe if done more uniformly, there'd be 10 to 12 stripes, total 80 to 96 rows plus CO and closing the seam). It took the rest of the skein and part of another to crochet it to the cuff. I used single crochet, 1-2 sc into the cuff's edge loop, then sc into both the current and next cuff loop, repeat; stretched out frequently to make sure the crochet sts were roughly as stretchy as the hat and cuff. I may have done 2 chains between stitches to increase stretchiness...or that might have been a different project. In finishing, I used a new skein at the decrease end to draw the purl stripes almost closed. Then I turned the hat inside out and did the same for the ends of the recessed (knit) stripes. I wove in that tail. I used the working part of the yarn to crochet inward, then crochet a button/tie loop for the pompom to attach, then crocheted the loose end of the chain to the inside hat a bit further down (so the crocheted chain would lie flat with ends separate). Then I cut the yarn and wove in the end.
For a furry brim (cuff), I did 7 sts of stockinette (slipped edges) in the fur version of Thick & Quick. Grafted closed, using the tails to smooth out the edge at the graft. I used almost all of a skein for the cuff. I also crocheted a small ball (unstuffed, but a slightly larger stuffed ball would be better...I was low on furry yarn). I left the tails and tied them around the inside loop. I also had two alternate pompoms for the hat (one furry ball, purchased; one ball of Bernat Velvet...didn't look as good, but might be fun at times).
