This is the map for the section that starts with "Take up the loops all along the side of the heel (they should be 29)" and ends with "Continue to narrow the side needles, as directed, every second row, carrying on the pattern on the front needle, till you have reduced the stitches on each side needle, the first to 35, and the second to 36 stitches. There will now be 173 stitches all round."

  • The map has only one repeat of the patterned stripes, not the three called for in the sock pattern.
  • .. .. ..If the center section has "[k2tog] 6 times, [yo, k1] 11 times, yo, [ssk] 6 times", it should be worked as "[[k2tog] 6 times, [yo, k1] 11 times, yo, [ssk] 6 times, p1] twice, [k2tog] 6 times, [yo, k1] 11 times, yo, [ssk] 6 times"
  • .. .. ..If the center section has "k35", it should be worked as "k35, p1, k35, p1, k35"
  • The first round of this map is a polite fiction to get stitches picked up and the needles set up correctly: That's not mappable, so basically, keep in mind that the knitter needs to pick up 29 sts along each side of the heel flap and that the two picked up stitches nearest the instep stitches will be knitted together.
  • If you're following along after the heel, there is some rearrangement of needles. The last 12 stitches on the heel turn are now the start of needle 1. This map tells you to knit them, but you've already done that. So ignore that.
  • The k27, k2tog is done on the stitches that you've picked up from the edge of the heel flap. Likewise the ssk, k27 on the other side of the heel flap.

Errata:

  • In theory, you have 41 sts on each of the side needles, which can't be correct. There would be 28 sts for each gusset, then 25 sts for the sole: if these are split evenly and the middle stitch of the sole is the end of the round (as the pattern indicates), one needle (the first needle) will have 40 sts, while the third needle has 41. (Also, apparently after 11 increases, you'll have 51 sts on each of these needles.)
  • The second round has you knit 15 (so you're three sts into the gusset area and have 25 sts left), then alternate increases with knitting three stitches until you've made 11 increases, "which will bring you within 4 stitches of the end of the needle". By my calculations, this won't work. 11 increases will be separated by 30 knit stitches, which is more than the 25 available. You'll be into the instep stitches at that point. It will work if there are only two plain knit sts between each increase. (Realistically, though, this is an area where an experienced sock knitter would just make it work: 11 increases n the gusset area? Got it.)
  • "Continue to narrow the side needles, as directed, every second row, carrying on the pattern on the front needle, till you have reduced the stitches on each side needle, the first to 35, and the second to 36 stitches. There will now be 173 stitches all round." 173 is incorrect. 35 sts on the first needle plus 107 sts on the second needle plus 36 sts on the third needle equals 178 sts. (178 sts will also leave 136 sts after 3 14st decreases later on.)
