Pretty Open Diamond Border

From the Project Gutenberg version of Exercises in Knitting by Cornelia Mee.

Errata noted:

  • There is no row 10 in the written pattern
  • The instructions were a bit of a mess, all in all. They worked up until row 7, then they seemed to go from a bias/slanted border (which is fine) to one with more vertical edges (which is also fine), but the necessary stitches just weren't there.

In this interpretation, I've included the stitches needed to make vertical edges.

As a note, the basic stitch repeat is 8 sts. Row 1 starts with a multiple of 6 (plus a few). This makes for a prettier starting row, but it's also why the row repeat starts with row 3.

Shown with a cast-on count of 19 stitches.   Getting chart...

  • Row 1 (RS): K3, yo, k1, yo, *k5, yo, k1, yo, repeat from * to last 3 sts, k3 (multiple of 8 sts, plus 9).
  • Rows 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10: Purl.
  • Row 3: K1, k2tog, yo, k3, yo, *k2tog, k1, k2tog, yo, k3, yo, repeat from * to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.
  • Row 5: K2tog, yo, k5, *yo, k3tog, yo, k5, repeat from * to last 2 sts, yo, k2tog.
  • Row 7: K2, yo, k2tog, k1, k2tog, *yo, k3, yo, k2tog, k1, k2tog, repeat from * to last 2 sts, yo, k2.
  • Row 9: K3, yo, k3tog, yo, *k5, yo, k3tog, yo, repeat from * to last 3 sts, k3.
  • Repeat rows 3-10.
