Knitting off your stitches if you can't crochet

From "Traditional Lace Knitting" by Furze Hewitt.

This ingenious finish fits most neatly on a multiple of 4 plus 2 stitches. After the set-up row (row 9) repeat rows 10 and 11, finishing on a wrong-side row before the final cast-off.

I suggest that changing the second k2tog in the odd rows to ssk might give a neater effect.

Since posting this I noticed that Jared Flood uses it to finish his well-known version of the Hemlock Ring pattern. It works well with thick yarn.

BTW, I can crochet!

Shown with a cast-on count of 26 stitches.   Getting chart...

  • Rows 1, 3, 5, and 7 (RS): K26.
  • Rows 2, 4, 6, and 8: Purl.
  • Row 9: K1, k2tog, yo, k2tog, turn (4 sts).
  • Rows 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20: P1, 1-to-5 inc, p1, sl1 wyif, turn (8 sts).
